This volume provides a unique collection of mathematical tools and industrial case studies in digital manufacturing. It addresses various topics, ranging from models of single production technologies, production lines, logistics and workflows to models and optimization strategies for energy consumption in production.

Wolfgang, Austria, October Ulrich Langer. Angelo M. Realizing the need of interaction between universities and research groups in industry, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry ECMI was founded in by mathematicians from ten European universities. Since then it has been continuously extending and now it involves about all Euro pean countries.

Mathematics, as the language of the sciences, has always played an im portant role in technology, and now is applied also to a variety of problems in commerce and the environment. European industry is increasingly becoming dependent on high technology and the need for mathematical expertise in both research and development can only grow. These new demands on mathematics have stimulated academic interest in Industrial Mathematics and many mathematical groups world-wide are committed to interaction with industry as part of their research activities.

ECMI was founded with the intention of offering its collective knowledge and expertise to European Industry. The experience of ECMI members is that similar technical problems are encountered by different companies in different countries.

It is also true that the same mathematical expertise may often be used in differing industrial applications. Vincenzo Capasso. Polymers are substances made of macromolecules formed by thousands of atoms organized in one homopolymers or more copolymers groups that repeat themselves to form linear or branched chains, or lattice structures. The concept of polymer traces back to the years 's and is one of the most significant ideas of last century. It has given great impulse to indus try but also to fundamental research, including life sciences.

Macromolecules are made of sm all molecules known as monomers. The process that brings monomers into polymers is known as polymerization. A fundamental contri bution to the industrial production of polymers, particularly polypropylene and polyethylene, is due to the Nobel prize winners Giulio Natta and Karl Ziegler.

The ideas of Ziegler and Natta date back to , and the process has been improved continuously over the years, particularly concerning the design and shaping of the catalysts. Chapter 1 due to A. Fasano is devoted to a review of some results concerning the modelling of the Ziegler- Natta polymerization. The specific ex am pie is the production of polypropilene. The process is extremely complex and all studies with relevant mathematical contents are fairly recent, and several problems are still open.

Mathematical Models in Photographic Science. Avner Friedman. And as with other s- ences, mathematics began to play an increasing role in the development of photography. The mathematical models and problems encountered in p- tography span a very broad spectrum, from the molecular level such as the interaction between photons and silver halide grains in image formation, to chemical processing in?

The book contains seventeen chapters, each dealing with oneareaofphotographicscience.

About this book

Eachchapter, exceptthetwointroductory chapters, begins with general background information at a level understa- able by graduate and undergraduate students. It then proceeds to develop a mathematical model, using mathematical tools such as Ordinary Di? Next, some mathematical results are mentioned, often providing a partial solution to problemsraisedby the model.

Progress in Industrial Mathematics at ECMI 2016

Apart from the theoretical - pects, a major part of the conference was devoted to numerical methods for interdisciplinary applications, with emphasis on showing the potential of new computational methods for solving practical multidisciplinary problems. Hans Rosling. Nate Silver.

The History of Mathematics and Its Applications

He solidified his standing as the nation's foremost political forecaster with his near perfect prediction of the election. Drawing on his own groundbreaking work, Silver examines the world of prediction, investigating how we can distinguish a true signal from a universe of noisy data. Most predictions fail, often at great cost to society, because most of us have a poor understanding of probability and uncertainty. Condition: Fine.
